What is an estate plan?

An estate plan clarifies how your assets and responsibilities should be managed or distributed if you become incapacitated or pass away. This typically includes wills, powers of attorney, trusts, and healthcare directives.

Anyone over the age of 18 can create an estate plan but realistically, you won’t need one until you have significant material assets (like a home) and financial obligations (like mortgages and/or savings you want to leave behind for loved ones.)

Life changes, so your estate plan will, too. You can update your documents when major changes happen, like marriage, children, or you acquire new assets.

You should share your estate plan with the people you trust to act on your behalf if anything ever happens to you. Consider your executor, financial advisor, or a healthcare proxy.
